Popular Sports in the Netherlands
The Netherlands has about 25 thousand sports clubs. Over 5 million Dutch people are members of one or more of these associations. Based on these memberships, this top 10 list has been compiled. Which sports federations have most members? It should be mentioned that there are other sports that you can do on your own and you do not have to be a member of a sports federation. Running, in particular, is a very popular sport in the Netherlands. Most likely, the number of runners in Dutch is much greater than the number of footballers (the number 1 of this list). However, you can not count this accurately. However, an estimate of 2.4 million Dutch runners is estimated. And one thing is certain: Running is becoming more and more popular, the number of runners continues to grow.

Voetbal - First up is the most famous one in the Netherlands, and probably in the world. It doesn’t really come as a huge surprise if you ask me, and to be honest, I just can’t get my head around it. Why is everybody crazy about a bunch of guys (women soccer is far less known though, although they work as hard as the men) running around on a field behind a ball so popular? They are mostly overpaid lads with egos larger than life. They mostly marry beautiful ladies who are so “enhanced” that they are actually labelled with the oh so very famous WAG-tag! Ladies, do you wake up one morning and decide that being a WAG is where it’s at?! For the ones that don’t know what a WAG is, let me quickly explain. WAG’s are girlfriends or wives (for the really lucky ones) of a sports player, and they are typically characterized by having a glamorous lifestyle and a high media profile.

Tennis - The Royal Dutch Lawn Tennis Bond (KNLTB) is about 600 thousand members rich. These members are connected to about 1700 associations. They are organizing the Dutch Tennis Eredivisie, but are also involved in the organization of the Davis Cup, Fed Cup, Hopman Cup and the Wheelchair Tennis Masters. Of course, everyone is thinking of Richard Krajicek right away if you need to name a well-known Dutch tennis player. But there have been more (been). Here they are in a row.

Sports fishing - Sports fishing is run by over 570 thousand members. This is done through the Federation Sportvisserij Nederland. This federation covers 900 local fishing associations and regional federations. Through this organization, you can receive a VIS Pass, which allows you to fish in the waters (listed on a special list). You can also participate in game fishing and subscribe to the Visblad, which has everything in the field of sports fishing. In addition, there is the annual Studio Fish TV, the Dutch talk program on sports fishing, which can be seen every year for several weeks. Currently, the fourth season is broadcast (Sunday morning 9.00 RTL7). And have you seen ” Big Fish Klaas ” (van der Eerden)? He travels for his program (Monday evening 22.10 NPO 3) with fishing BNsers to the most beautiful fishing spots in the world.

Gymnastics - More than 300 thousand members count the Royal Dutch Gymnastics Union (KNGU). Not only the sports tournaments fall under this union, including acrobatic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, toddler and toddler gymnastics, gymnastics for the elderly, street dance, jazz dance, freerunning, group jumping and trampoline jumping are part of it. They are divided into many associations. In our country, we currently know two tops in the world of turn, namely Jeffrey Wammes and Yuri van Gelder.

Volleyball - The Dutch Volleyball Bond (KVB) has more than 115 thousand members. This bond is also called Nevobo and is responsible for all national volleyball teams in the Netherlands. These are spread over 1000 volleyball associations. Our national volleyball team has been doing it for years. This applies to both ladies and gentlemen. Gaining the gold medal by the gentlemen at the Atlanta Games of Atlanta was even elected to the 20th Century Sports Moment.

Swimming - The membership of the Royal Netherlands Swimming Pool (KNZB) is approximately 140 thousand. All swimming sports are housed in this country: swimming pools, water polo, open-water swimming, synchronous swimming and jumping. These are distributed among about 440 swimming associations. The KNZB has also set up two talent centres, namely the National Zweminstituut Amsterdam and the National Zweminstituut Eindhoven. Jacco Verhaeren is in charge of both institutes. Many medals have already been achieved by the talents trained here. Inge de Bruijn, Pieter van der Hoogenband and Ranomi Kromowidjojo are examples of this.
